Zhu Bajie, was originally a general in heaven, who was banished for misbehavior. At a party for Heavenly figures, he became drunk, and tried to seduce the Goddess of the moon. The Goddess reported this to the Jade Emperor. He was exiled to earth where he became reincarnated as a Half-Pig monster demon. He later is recruited to become one of Sanzang's bodyguards, and disciples. However, his issues of laziness, gluttony, and chasing after pretty women, causes many problems for the party, along the journey. So does his jealousy towards Wukong. He also, eventually, begins to atone for his sins, and overcomes obstacles along the way. His Buddhist name "Zhu Wuneng", given by Guanyin, means "pig (reincarnated) who is aware of ability," which is a reference to the fact that he holds much value in himself, that he is not troubled by his appearance. Tang Sanzang gave him the nickname "Bajie" which means "eight restraints" to remind Zhu of his Buddhist diet.
