Sha Wujing, like Bajie, was originally a general in Heaven. In a fit of rage, he accidentally destroyed a valuable vase. As punishment, he received 800 strikes from a rod, from the Jade Emperor, before being exiled to earth. On Earth, he is reincarnated as a man-eating sand demon. He is later recruited as a bodyguard, and disciple to Sanzang. He is given the Buddhist name, Sha Wujing. The name meant "awakened to purity". When he first met Sanzang, and the other disciples, they thought he was a demon. So Wukong and Bajie attacked him instantly. Guanyin had to intervene, to clear up the misunderstanding. Wujing became Sanzang’s disciple, and his bodyguard. Wujing was very kind, and loyal to his master. His fighting skills may not be as good as Wukong and Bajie, but his logic and intellect make up for that.
